It’s Christmas Eve and we’re finally starting to get a little bit of the white stuff here in Toronto. There are high hopes for a white Christmas but it’s looking more like a green one in the forecasts. However, the ski resorts around the area have begun to open their runs and many are already operational. We’re planning on making a trip to Blue Mountain on the 26th so hopefully we get some more snow before then!! If you’re heading out to the slopes, remember to keep warm and stay safe.
Here is Franky’s choice for his 2012/2013 season Snowboard Set.
Board : Ride Kink
Bindings: Drake MTX Axis
Boots: Solomon Dialogue
Choosing a Snowboard
The ‘Kink’ model made by the company Ride Snowboards is an amazing all around freestyle board. It’s good for hitting the park/rails and for just free riding. This one is a 156cm board, perfect for my height. When choosing a snowboard, it is important to note the size/length of the board. A longer board will pick up speed easier and a shorter board is better for more control.
The Chin Test
An easy way to determine what height is perfect for beginners is to :
- Stand the snowboard up vertically
- Match to the weight of the bottom of your chin
Choosing the Boots
There are many different snowboarding boots out there and they are measured by a flex rating. The key to choosing the perfect boot is to first determine where you are going to ride. A softer boot with more flex is preferred by beginner/ park riders. A stiffer boot will provide a quicker response for mountain and freeriders.
Traditional lace – Regular shoe laces.
Quick Pull – Independent tightening that easy for re-tightening with gloves on.
Boa – Easiest method of tightening by turning a knob.
Choosing the Bindings
There are two main types of bindings for snowboards. Traditional straps and Step in bindings. Step in bindings are like the ones available on skis. They are easy to get in and out of. Strap in bindings usually have 2 straps per binding and work on a buckle system. Choosing the type of binding the is right for your is similar to picking the right boot. It all depends if you want something for the Park, the mountain or for just free riding.
